The Nation of Vicena

The nation of Vicena is currently an NPC nation that ties into the history of Avanne and Castana. It is currently not open for RP, nor are characters from Vicena being accepted at this time.

The flag of the nation of Vicena. The Vicenan Empire is one of the oldest political entities in the known world, having in one form or another a history dating back over a thousand years continuously, though that history has been far from simple. The Empire once held nearly all the lands around the central sea, as well as vast holdings to the east of what is now the Vicenan capital. As will tend to happen to a far-flung empire, the native people at the edges of the Empire's control began to revolt, beginning in the east. As fighting intensified on the eastern front, those lands to the west took advantage of the Empire's attention being elsewhere and gained their own relative independence, which grew more and more with time.

The Empire, as it stands now, retains only a fraction of its former land, including the nation of Vicena, as well as a handful of provinces immediately surrounding it. It remains, however, the predominant political power in the land around the central sea, owing both to its ancient history as well as its close ties to the Orienite Church. While the church and the Empire are technically two separate entities, in practice, they function as one. As the power of the Empire has waned, so has the power of its leaders. The Imperial Senate technically has the power to legislate and form policy through the Emperor, but more often than not, this body spends more time in internal politics and strife than it spends doing anything constructive. The Emperor remains the titular head of the Empire, though the past several Emperors have been little more than figureheads, taking instruction from the Praelocutor of the Orienite Church.

As many very old civilizations are, the people of the Empire are stratified into very rigid social and economic classes, with the conservative and generally decadent ruling class of the nobility, and the lower working classes kept carefully appeased and therefore under the thumb of the nobility. The Vicenan Empire is vaguely analogous to the late Byzantine Empire, though centered in what would be Italy, rather than in modern-day Turkey.
