Advancement

One of the first things players will ask upon learning that there are coded skills and skill levels is 'How do I increase my skill level?'. Some of you may be familiar with hard-coded advancement systems from other games, and while we retain a few of those elements, we've tried to make the whole system a little less formal and hopefully keep everyone happy (okay, so it's a lofty goal, but we're trying!).

There are two elements to advancement. One is @praise (see 'help @praise'). This command allows you to enter a bit of commentary regarding another player's roleplay. In effect, it's saying thanks and paying a compliment to someone for an enjoyable scene or plot. This praise will be collected over the span of a month and then archived by the staff. Praise will be used by the staff as additional evidence as to whether you're worthy of advancing a skill, along with the second component of advancement: the application. This is a @mail composed to the staff members describing what sort of IC work you've done that warrants your advancement. You can apply for only one advancement a month. The staff will review your application and consult what praise you received as an indication of how active you were and determine whether or not you get an advancement point for the month, at which time you can use it to increase or take the skill you applied for using the @skill command.

Chargen

Chargen (short for Character Generation) is where you'll set the information necessary to begin developing your character and preparing for roleplay. The help files on the subject will point out specifics about each room of chargen and what you set there.

In room 1 (Chargen - Physical Details), you'll set your gender, age and description.

Gender (@set me:gender=<male/female>): What gender your character is, either male or female.

Age (@set me:age=<number>): How old your character is. Assume a lifespan of about 65-70 years at maximum.

Description (@describe me as <description> or @edit me): What your character looks like. Use {p} for line breaks. If you need help using the Editor, type 'help [Editor]'.

In the second chargen room (Chargen - Character Details 1), you will set your area, religion and nationality. Each of these is explained below.

Area (@area <Avanne, Castana or Vicena>): This is the area your character calls home ICly, not where you are from originally. You can choose from any of the three RP areas. Remember that the holy city where the Orienite church is based is not a main RP area, and thus if you plan to be an Orienite priest, please select an area where you wish to be stationed more or less permanently.

Religion (@religion <Orienite, Vesperan or Lumite>): This is the faith your character follows, and must be selected from one of the three main faiths. Keep in mind that heretics that do not follow one of these faiths is likely to be outcast, shunned or worse.

Nationality (@set me:nationality=<Avannais, Castanan, Vicenan or Kuredin>): This is your ethnic background. If you have parents from different nationalities, select the nationality you consider yourself to be. Kuredin indicates that you are from the desert lands to the south, but reside in one of the three RP areas, most likely Castana.

Full Name (@set me:full-name=<name>): This allows you to enter a family (last) name.

Title (@set me:title=<title>): The title should indicate what your character does, what his or her occupation is, such as Avannais Noble or Blacksmith. More suggested titles are under 'help [Titles]'.

In the third chargen room (Chargen - Character Details 3), you'll set your character's background, both public and private.

Public Background: (@set-public-bg): To enter the background, type the command, hit Enter, and begin typing. End by entering a . on a line by itself. This background will be readable by anyone by using the command @public-bg . As such, it should only include information that is publicly available without a great deal of effort, such as your name, family members, what your occupation is, and so on. It should be relatively short as well.

Private Background (@set-private-bg): Enter this the same way you entered the public background. This background should include any justification for anything special or secret about your character, including skills, including weapons and magic. This can be longer than the public background, but please try to avoid writing entire novels.

The fourth room (Chargen - Skills) is the final required room. Here you'll set any miscellaneous skills your character is capable of. The list of skills is available at 'help [skills]'.

To set a skill, type @skill <skill name> <skill level>. For example, to take craftsmanship at level 2, type '@skill Craftsmanship 2'. You can not take any skill at a level higher than 2 in chargen, nor can you take more than 3 skills. Increasing skill levels or taking additional skills requires advancement through roleplay and application to the staff. Read 'help [advancement]' for details.

Levels

All skills on Memorium have a level of ability attached to them. These levels range from one at the lowest to five at the highest. An example of what each skill level would mean is described below.

Level 1: You have a passing familiarity with the skill. You have performed some sort of feat that requires the skill once or twice, but you have no formal training in it and are still just learning.

Level 2: You are talented enough to perform the skill on your own, with a reasonable range of possible applications, skilled enough to be considered an authority on the ability by the uneducated masses. A person of this skill level would be the average person making a living at the skill.

Level 3: You are considered to be the best at this skill in local parts, with either long experience or natural ability making your name recognizable to both the general public as well as those in your field.

Level 4: You are considered one of the very best in your generation, reknowned not only locally but on a much wider level as well. You are consulted by many for your knowledge and theories and are in wide demand as the best and the brightest. A skill level of 4 would be equivalent to the leader of a national military, a troubadour of historical significance, a craftsman whose works would someday be gathered for a museum.

Level 5: You are one of the very best, the most talented, the most experienced, the most capable, not only now, but are considered among the best ever at your chosen skill. You are considered an expert among experts, and rightly so. There is little you can not do with your skill if you simply put your mind and effort into the task at hand. There are few, if any, with equivalent ability to yours at any one time, or indeed ever. A skill level of 5 is restricted to special feature characters, as they would be extremely rare. For example, the prophet Lumah would be considered to have a skill level of 5 in Magic.

Praise

@praise <player> with <comment>

@praised [me]

The @praise command allows you to register a compliment for a player based on good roleplay. These compliments are collected and archived by staff on a month-by-month basis, and are used as additional information to gauge whether or not you can advance or take a new skill (see 'help advancement' for more on this).

The @praised command, with no arguments, lists the @praise you've registered for other characters in the past month. @praised me will show last month's @praise that you received.

Skills

There are a number of skills available to a character on Memorium. Below, we'll discuss what those are and what they entail. If you want to know what the various skill levels mean in terms of what you can accomplish with a certain level in a skill, please read 'help [levels]'.

Agriculture: This includes any skills that involve working with the earth to grow plants, either on a large or small scale. Examples of this would be gardeners, farmers and herbalists.

Craftsmanship: This skill covers anyone that works with their hands or tools to create things. This includes armorers and smiths as well as artists of all types -- painters, sculptors, mosaicists, and so on.

Education: This covers the basics such as reading and writing to the more scholarly pursuits such as mathematics, history, languages and so forth. Anyone with a scholarly background or in a position requiring education (such as a diplomat) would need this skill. If you do not have this skill, that indicates you can not read or write, which is not entirely uncommon in this time period.

Husbandry: For anyone that works with animals on a regular basis, though it is not necessary for someone who rides a horse. It is meant more for farmers who deal mostly with livestock, as well as stablehands and military people that care for large numbers of animals. This also covers animal trainers and breeders.

Nautical: The skill of making one's living on the sea, from fishermen to sailors to pirates. Any character personally involved in trade carried out over the sea would need this skill.

Performance: A skill for anyone who performs to make a living or as a hobby. Actors, musicians and poets would fall under this category, as well as anyone who makes their living as an orator. Those that frequently appear in public, such as high-ranking nobles, often have this skill as well. Many performers also require some skill in education.

Warfare: Put simply, this is the understanding of the art of war, as a military skill. This includes battle tactics and military leadership, as well as the workings of weapons and armor. This is not a necessary skill in order to have skill in a weapon, as a street thug may not be able to fight a war, but can wield a dagger.

Titles

A character's title is an important piece of information. It should indicate the character's profession, or what his or her official IC title is. For example, a duchess in Avanne should set a title like 'Duchess, House <Whatever Her House Name Is>'. The owner of an inn in Castana might choose a title such as 'Innkeeper'. If you are a member of the priesthood of any of the three religions, you should choose your title according to the ranks set for the priesthood. These can be found under the help files for each religion, in the Hierarchy section.

Your title will be seen by anyone watching the login monitor, as well as by anyone that checks your @finger information, so please make sure it's appropriate. When you are checked for approval, the staff will make certain your title fits your character, and reserves the right to check from time to time to ensure it stays that way, simply for continuity's sake.

Restricted Characters

In Memorium there are some character types that are restricted or closed completely, at least for a time. The difference between restricted and closed is that restricted characters require an application before being played and closed means that staff is not accepting any characters of that sort at the moment. Restricted characters will almost always remain restricted while closed character types will eventually become available. We will announce on the game when we make a closed character race available.

Restricted Characters

The following characters need an application. Speak to a staff member for more information

-Members of the Sultan's Qadim
-Members of the Castana military at rank Lugal and higher.
-Heads of nobles houses and other faction leaders.
-Members of the Asipu at level Usmi and higher
-Those desiring to be part of the royal family in Castana must speak with Hebat first. If a noble house has a PC leader you must speak with that player before making a member of that family.

Closed Characters

-Hoinari
-Vicenans
-Members of the Kuredin desert tribes

Applications

Applications are required for any character that needs higher or a greater number of stats than what can be set in chargen. They are also required for any feature character, such as the head of a noble house or a higher member of a government or priesthood. All positions listed on the web page and the @jobs list that require an application will be noted as such, but they are not the only ones that will require an application. If you are uncertain if your character needs an application, feel free to ask a staff member.

What is required in an application? You need to include the basics of the character, such as name, age, nationality, region he or she will be in, religion and stats. You also need to include a background of the character detailing how the character attained the position or stats you are asking for. It should also include all background 'secrets', such as certain skills or acts that the general populace wouldn't know about. Applications are seen only by staff and the player writing them, so you need not worry that soon everyone will find out everything you've ever done. You can write the application in whichever form you wish, just as long as it is complete in its details. Applications need not be ten pages long to be good, but we do ask that players put some effort into the applications. We would also like to see some ideas you have for the character, especially if the character is in a feature position.

Characters are not the only things that require an application. If you have an idea of a new faction for the game, you will need to send in an application for approval before it can be considered an IC faction and part of the game. Do *not* assume that because you submitted an application that you can begin role playing a faction. Only once staff has approved it can that faction be considered an IC entity on the game. We are not trying to be control freaks, but as is stated in the Player Contribution file, we want to be aware of new factions, as well as giving other players the OOC knowledge as well.

Like any other submission, please send your application in plain text form to memorium@silverselene.com
